Helping
in need veterans
Bobby Hughes, who is a volunteer in the DAV
(Disable American Veterans) Escort Service, has reached a total
of 20,000 hours of service since
1981.
Born in Ridgeville, SC, and raised in
Summerville, SC, Bobby has worked in the Escort Service area the
entire time that he has been a VA Volunteer. Bobby is a
member of the St. George DAV Chapter 78.
A Veteran, who was injured in a plane crash
during the Vietnam War, Bobby contributes the help he received
from VA personnel, and in particular from a VA Counselor, after
his injury, as the main reason he decided to be a VA Volunteer
at the Ralph Johnson VA Center located in Charleston. He credits
the physicians and other staff members with helping him over the
years. You can find Bobby on the job on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays.
Talking with the other Veterans at the
hospital means a lot to him. Bobby says, "Volunteering keeps me
from just sitting around the house and getting into trouble." He
enjoys what he does as a VA Volunteer and sometimes can "combine
business with that pleasure" by making most of his V A medical
appointments on the days he volunteers. Bobby hopes to continue
being a Volunteer in the Escort Service for as long as possible.
